Media Studies Year 11 2011
Kia ora and welcome to Year 11 Media Studies. This course outline will give you details of the course for the year ahead The course is assessed through Level 1 Achievement Standards and includes both internal and one external (exam) standards.

Term One:
Getting to know you
As an introduction to senior media studies we will do some activites designed to let us get to know you better and to give you a taste of what the year will be about
Eating Media Lunch
By the end of this unit you will be able to describe why audiences are so important to media producers and compare one another person’s media consumption patterns with your own. The assessment for this unit will focus on the use of social media.
AS 90989 1.1 Demonstrate understanding of how individuals interact with the media
Internal Standard 3 credits
Assessment: Due in week 8. A report will be written in class based on earlier findings. Re-submission opportunity may be available, provided you have completed all aspects of the assessment.
Word on the Street
By the end of the year you will be able to describe how the media ‘cover’ a current issue (eg the PPTA action) or event (eg the Rugby World Cup). Coverage means how the event or issue is shown in the media. This unit is ongoing and you will be able to describe several examples of media coverage by the end of the year.

External Standard 4 credits
Assessment: In the external NCEA exam 9.30 am on 10th November 2011
You will get a chance to practice this standard in both school exams and will be required to complete several tasks during the so that you can have an example of media coverage to use in the final exam.
Term Two:
Film Forensics
This is a close reading and genre unit. By the end of the unit you will be able to describe how different elements are used to create meaning in film (eg cinematography, sound and editing elements). You will be able to recognise how these elements fit into a certain genre.
AS 90990 1.2 Demonstrate understanding of selected elements of media text(s)
Internal Standard 3 credits
Assessment: The assessment will be in two parts. You must complete both parts to achieve. Part one is due in Week 5 and part two in Week 8 of Term 2.
